A compass with its own memory

The digital compass Silva Nomad has an inbuilt memory, which means that the user can always see the set course along with any deviations from it. The course back to the starting point is also stored, should the user want to return. The Silva Nomad has inbuilt lighting, which makes navigation and outdoor pursuits easier, at any time of the day or night.

By using the Silva Nomad, the user can set a desired course to a destination in the terrain. The compass saves information on the compass course and warns the user if he or she is off course. It also shows the degree to which the user is to veer to the right or left in order to keep on the correct course. At the same time as the user stores a course to a destination, the correct counter course is automatically stored. When a series like Kit Carson’s aluminium handled line has been so successful, it is bound to spark calls for variations. In this case, the request was for a spear point blade similar to Kit’s M18 design. As soon as CRKT saw the first sketches, they knew they should offer it in two sizes similar to the “Little Bulldog” and “Big Dog”.

The new swedged and recurved blade is ground to a spear point shape, using premium AUS 8 stainless steel in non-reflective frost finish to offer superior edge retention. The grind incorporates a false top edge and deep belly, yet retains a full width central spine for most of its width for maximum strength. CRKT offers both Razor-sharp and Combined Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ Serrated edge grinds.

Teflon® bearings at the blade pivot assure velvety smooth one hand opening and closing, using Kit Carson’s trademark dual chequered thumb studs which also act as a blade stop.

The M21 also features the very popular “Carson Flipper” blade extension, which aids opening and acts as an additional blade guard.

Kit Carson’s open build uses contoured handles of 6061 T6 aluminium, hard anodized charcoal grey. They are CNC machined with a perimeter radius for a comfortable grip with or without work gloves, skeletonized to reduce weight. There is a single stainless steel locking liner with friction grooves for positive locking.

CRKT have also incorporated the patented* Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS®) into the M21 models, which converts them into virtual fixed blades when engaged.

Every model features a removable Teflon plated stainless steel clothing/gear clip.

Like no other flashlight, the Lucido C10 uses ten super-bright white light emitting diodes (LEDs) that have a typical life of over 100,000 hours. This is over 11 years of continuous usage (with change of batteries). The C10 also has a specially designed printed circuit board to control the flow of voltage from the three D cell alkaline batteries, which are not included with the flashlight.

This means that the batteries powering a Lucido C10 flashlight will last over 600 hours. In fact, after leaving a C10 on, in the Lucido lab, engineers could still read a newspaper using only the light output from the C10 after one month of continuous operation on the same set of 3 D cell alkaline batteries. And the C10 only weighs nine ounces, not including batteries and 1.5 pounds including alkaline batteries. This means it is about 25% lighter than a typical D cell flashlight.

The Lucido C10 is truly waterproof, up to three feet, not just water resistant. This makes it a good choice for those flashlight users who are exposed to the elements. The C10’s durable construction, with genuine rubber over-moulding, means you will not break a light element if you drop it onto the ground. This is unlike a typical D cell flashlight which uses filament bulb technology which can break the bulb if dropped. Except for batteries and abuse, the C10 has a three year limited warranty. The warranty includes the unbreakable LEDs.

StrikeaLight Firestarter 9mm Dia Magnesium

Never worry over wet matches or lighters that don't work again! How does it work? StrikeaLight will always work wet or dry, it is even water proof! The flint (the dark rod) when scraped with any hard sharp edge creates a shower of sparks. These sparks are twice as hot as a match so they will light most flammable materials. It is also great for lighting gas stoves or BBQs. Even in the worst conditions when your tinder is damp and hard to light, just shave off some magnesium (the silver metal) into a small pile put some damp tinder on top (heat goes up) and light it with the sparks from your flint and you have got fire! Is it safe? YES even thought the sparks are very hot (3,000 degrees Celcius) and easily light most fuel and dry tinder it is a point of contact fire. Meaning it is very hot near the flint but the sparks go out just a few centimetres away. Unlike a match when you drop it can light an unwanted fire. But if you drop your StrikeaLight it just drops. What about magnesium? Some people worry about the magnesium rod catching fire. You would have to heat the whole thing to 900 degrees celcius to get it to light and to do that you would have to hold a blow torch to it for several minutes. Does it need special care? No. While it is waterproof meaning it will not absorb water, if it's left in a damp environment the flint may corrode and crumble over time. So treat it as you would a knife or any other tool if it gets wet do not worry about it, just wipe it off before putting it away .

Howard Viele’s most inspired custom design combines collectible artistry with full tactical work knife functionality. A knife you must own.

Howard Viele, Knifemaker’s Guild member for over two decades, ranks right at the top of the list of those making high tech locking liner folders. As Ken Warner, Editor of Knives ’85 said, “The man cuts a clean line, often a new line, every time he goes for it. Viele knives are handsome knives that look so good, and so often different as well, you can’t help noticing. That’s practically a definition of style.” At knife shows, Howard usually sells out in the first couple of hours to people who intend to carry and use his knives, which Ken Warner has called “possibly the Rolex of the cutlery world.”

Unfortunately, Howard can only personally make 50 or so knives a year, so when we saw his handmade knife similar to the Wasp, CRKT knew it was a perfect candidate for a new model. Howard then developed the new Wasp design especially for CRKT. CRKT believe they’ve achieved a new level of production manufacturing quality.

The blade is premium AUS 118 stainless steel in a frost finish with a titanium handle, completed in a silver/gray bead blast. The titanium frame is precision machined to create a pocket for the stainless steel locking liner. The strength of titanium allows an elegant and easily-cleaned open back design. The scales are G10, in a custom laminate of alternating blue and black fiberglass unique to CRKT, contoured to fit the hand, and minimally textured for a sure grip.

Since the 1940’s it has been widely accepted that constructing a solar still is the most effective way to obtain water in arid regions. This is not the case. Solar stills are still useful for distilling urine, seawater or contaminated water into safe drinking water, but as a collection method they are substantially inferior to transpiration bags.

A transpiration (or condensation) bag is nothing more than a large, clear plastic bag used to extract water from vegetation. Typical size is two metres long, a metre wide and 150 microns thick (thinner bags are more prone to punctures). It can be positioned over the entire shrub or just a single branch, and is then tied off to seal it from the air. A catchment hollow (or ‘sump’) is created in the plastic’s lowest point to collect water that is transpired from the foliage. This condenses and trickles down the sides of the plastic. The process is simple but must be performed properly.

A former Chief Instructor for the Australian Defence Force Survival School and probably the world’s leading expert on water procurement by transpiration has tested but solar stills and transpiration bags under all types of Australian conditions. In a 12-hour period the most water obtained from a solar still was 300 millilitres. By contrast, transpiration bags encircling single saplings regularly produced outputs averaging 800 millilitres. The least amount of water obtained with a single transpiration bag was 250 millilitres. One bag left from dawn to dusk on a tea tree sapling yielded an impressive 6 litres.

2001 Blade Show Imported Knife of the Year
The BladeLOCK™ folding knife, manufactured by Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) and designed by award-winning knife maker Michael Walker, was named Imported Knife of the Year at the annual Blade Show in Atlanta on June 9th.

The show, sponsored by Blade Magazine, is billed as the largest knife show in the world. The award was won by the BladeLOCK by a vote of production knife makers and accessory manufacturers- the peers of CRKT.

The BladeLOCK is an incredibly strong stainless steel folding knife with a blade that locks when open, and locks when closed. The ingenious positive lock system operates by pressing the thumb stud.

To open, press the thumb stud and rotate the blade as you would other knives. When you hear the clean, crisp snap of steel locking with steel, the blade is locked-no doubt about it! The strength of the BladeLOCK meets or exceeds any claimed lock strength of existing production folders.

To close, press the thumb stud and rotate the blade into the handle. Snap! The blade is locked closed, with no chance of opening. It can be carried with complete safety in tip-up position, in a pocket, or clipped to a belt or webbing.

BladeLOCK creator Michael Walker is an artist, craftsman, inventor of the locking liner folder, and designer of over 20 knife lock systems. He says, When I applied thumb studs to my locking liners in the '80s, it occurred to me that it could be the basis for an internal lock. I was granted the patent for the BladeLOCK™ and have made many custom versions. However, no major knife manufacturer was then capable of putting the BladeLOCK into production because of the challenging machining and close tolerances required- until now.

The BladeLOCK is made to the exacting specifications of CRKT, executed with world-class precision. Like all of Michael's work, the knife is a striking design, with perfect heft and balance. He says simply, In my work, form follows function.

The AUS 6M stainless steel blade is a Walker Clip Point in satin finish, pivoting on oil impregnated bronze bearings. The open design 420J2 stainless steel frame receives a contrasting bead blast finish. Black injection moulded Zytel® is used for the back spacer, lock covers, and scales. Torx fasteners are used throughout.

Beyond its sleek lines, the handle proves to be highly ergonomic when gripped, with a deep finger notch and prominent thumb ramp to provide security. Friction grooves at the choil and thumb ramp increase purchase, and also can aid in one hand closure of the blade.

The custom Teflon® plated stainless steel clothing/gear clip is removable.
